I think one needs to be super-confident first

If you're taking steps into new territory and you're petrified or still double minded, then maybe you shouldn't take the steps yet. That's my opinion. Or else, when anything mildly negative happens, you may start to second-guess your decision.

I think its a valid question though. My friends think everyone must be optimistic but cautious but I think that's a lack of faith!

I think I understand why your friends prefer to be optimistic but cautious, I see it as self-preservation. However, I tend to lean more towards your approach, super-confident about taking the steps, only being cautious that it was God's voice I heard before taking the steps.
